I

switchyard will be screened in back of the
for ebay , at the upper left of the picture,
and out of the public view. Transformers will
be obscured and the conductors will be buried.
A visitor center is planned jointly with the
Forest Service.

Now I'd like to move on to Pueblo Dam.
This is an artist's rendering superimposed on
the photograph. The first contract was awarded
in June 1970 to include foundation work only in
the amount of the contract $5,143,000. Work
is now in progress on the cutoff trenches and
grout curtain under earth-fill portions of the
dam. The trench extends quite a distance
towards the far hor izon. The foundation for
concrete buttresses are outlined in the rock
formations which goes across in back of the
old barrier dam. The old barrier dam itself
will not be taken out, but it will be inundated.

The spillway stilling basin is cut out of
rock in the area that I am indicating. But-
tress excavation is shown in the foreground.
You can see the excavation in this area and
around in this area.

The river channel has been excavated to
bedrock and a 33,000 cubic yard concrete plug
is now being placed in this hole. Overall the
contractor is on schedule and expects to com-
plete the foundation phase of the dam con-
struction by December 1971. Funds to start
the second contract at Pueblo Dam are not part
of our budget for Fiscal Year 1972.

I

Now I'd like to discuss in a little more
detail how we are meeting the environmental
needs. This is a topic of keen interest. We
are doing many things throughout the project
to cover up our tracks. Here are some. Cut
slopes are being revegetated on permanent
roads. This picture was taken at Ruedi. On
tougher cuts and fill, such as this, aspen
mats are used to provide a mulch. This work
