A second well was then drilled <br />quickly because of the imperative need for <br />water. <br /> <br />The results, $10,500 capital investment, <br />$1.00 an acre-foot for power, 1500 acre-feet <br />for the year, equal to 1/4 of all the water I <br />delivered from Prewitt Reservoir this year. <br />The net drawdown to date of only a few feet. <br />With known gravel deposits, easily 3 times the <br />water could have been extracted from the same <br />wells by increasing the size of the pumps, and <br />paying the price for all of the water being <br />lifted a greater distance. <br /> <br />The $10 million estimated as cost of <br />right-of-way alone for Narrows would install <br />at $5,000 each, 2,000 wells and pumps such as <br />the above. If the location were such that a <br />rechargeable aquifer exists such as where <br />these were found, there could be in anyone <br />season 1,500,000 acre-feet pumped and a really <br />95 percent efficient reservoir created under- <br />ground for 500,000 acre-feet based upon the <br />prObable net consumptive use within the area. <br />Now, you understand gentlemen, just because <br />you pull 500 acre-feet out of a well in any <br />one season you are not consuming all of that. <br />A certain amount of it percolates back into <br />the ground, a little of it goes here and there, <br />and perhaps the net consumptive use in some <br />instances will hold to half and in some in- <br />stances may only be a third. <br /> <br />I will speak out just a little bit more <br />and divert from the printed tex~. S. <br />Geological Survey estimates there are some 12 <br />million acre-feet of water in the underground <br />from Kersey to the Nebraska state line, and I <br />we are fooling around with surface flows in <br />hundreds of thousands of acre-feet annually. <br />We have these recurring droughts and they are <br />in cycles and since they are, we need some <br />method in order to bridge and bring out the <br />averages, such as the Bureau has used.
