MR. ODELL:

"Mr. Chairman, members of the Board, ladies
and gentlemen, I am sorry to have to report the
sad situation of runoff in the State of Colorado.
This last month was the ninth consecutive month
when the runoff was below normal. The way
things are going there is no improvement in the
immediate future. I was very much pleased at
Bob Jennings' report that we have obtained as
much water as we have in Glen Canyon and it
appears now that we have really made some
progress and I think it should work out very
well. Apparently all we can hope for is a
little more precip in the next couple of months
to help us out a little bit in this situation.

I

Most of our low elevation streams peaked
late in May this year. A few of the higher
elevation streams, particularly those up around
10,000 or 11,000 feet, peaked in the first part
of June; one peaked on the 7th and another about
the 15th, the middle of the month.

I

A lot of our effort this spring on runoff
went into these high elevation stations on
the Fryingpan River. I would like to point out
sort of a sad situation that has occurred here.
This Fry-Ark Project has been in the mill for
years and years and it was only after authoriza-
tion of the project that funds were made avail-
able so information could be collected on
streamflows at points of diversion. Those
stations were put in last summer. We have one
year's record of runoff. These are difficult
stations to operate. The only way that we could
get in to these areas is on snowshoes. He tried
our snow vehicles; a regular snowcat just won't
operate in areas like that - you can't get
through the trees with it. We did purchase a
small vehicle that we hoped would help us out
but it wasn't too successful. So it was a
matter of some just hard work on snowshoes to
get into these stations.

Leo Gamble is, of necessity, working on a
design for this project starting this month.
Like I say, we have one year's record on this.
The boys, I think, have done an outstandin~ job
