here. In the last years of Senator Ed Johnson's life, he would come
to board meetings and he could never get a battery that would work in
his hearing aid. He had a bunch of them, as you may recall, and he
would put one in and put it in his ear and he couldn't hear anything.
But whenever they mentioned Juniper, whether he had his hearing aid in
or out, he would always respond.

(Laughter)

I

And speaking of politicians. I think we ought to recognize that
Representative John Carroll from Adams County is here. John, will you
stand up and be recognized? You grew up in Gunnison, didn't you?

Representative Carroll, My grandfather homesteaded here, though.

Mr. Stapleton: All right. I understand you are a candidate for public
office in this area. Good to have you with us.

Representative Carroll: Thank you.

~tt.,Stapleton: Did that complete everything on number 3?

Mr.., Fetcher: As John Sherman said earlier, we were bitterly disap-
poi~ted when we learned that the $100,000 had been deleted from the
appropriations for this coming year; that is, the study for the con-
tinuation of the Lower Yampa. And on checking on it, the first report
was that the House had eliminated the $100,000. I checked with
S~nator Haskell's office and found out that it had not been included
in the appropriations proposed to the House. As I understand it.
Senator Haskell will introduce the appropriation of $100,000 for the
continuation of the study. Perhaps Larry, you have later information
on this.

Mr. Sparks: The Administration simply gave directions that the project
was to be terminated. If you recall, this board met last March and
r~quested that $100,000 be appropriated and this request was presented
in testimony to both the House and the Senate.

I had a conversation with our representative in Washington yesterday, I
Mr. IvaI Goslin of the Upper Colorado River Commission. He is watching
the matter in the Senate. We have reason to believe that it will be
included in the Senate appropriation.

~lr. Fetcher: Is there anything that this board can do as a group today
to maybe assure its passage in the Senate?

-30-
