Poster Contest Winner: The winner of this year's Water Education Poster contest is Paul Hamilton-Pennel
of McKinley Thatcher Elementary Scholl in Denver.

Cooperative Satellite Monitoring Stream Gaging Upgrades: In 1999 the CWCB and the U. S, Geological
Survey (USGS) began a cooperative effort to update existing USGS stream gaging stations throughout the
State, In many cases, the USGS had gages and cooperators for operation and maintenance, but the gages
were outdated and/or incapable of transmitting real time data via satellite, We were interested in upgrading
these stations to make data more readily available for DSS modeling, flood waming and analysis, and
instream flow monitoring, This cooperative effort would also make data more readily available to the
Division of Water Resources and other water users, Funding for upgrades was obtained from the Severance
Tax Operational Account and more recently from the Construction Fund, An MOU between the CWCB and
USGS was signed and equipment has been purchased for this effort since 1999,

This year, the CWCB has purchased approximately $40,000 of additional gaging equipment. Pressure
transducers and Accubar Bubble Gauges have also been added to increase the reliance and accuracy of data
during early spring, late fall, and winter conditions, The selection of gages to be updated is based on input
from each of the CWCB sections, The USGS also identifies specific gages that need to be updated, Input is
also obtained from the Division Engineer's offices, Once the gages are evaluated, they are prioritized and an
equipment selection process takes place, CWCB staff then orders the equipment in early March and delivers
the equipment to the USGS for summer installation,

8210 Data Collection Platform

Submersible Pressure Transducer

Fiscal Year 2001 / 2002 Equipment Upgrades

Arikaree River (new Installation)

Accubar Bubble Gauge

n/a

Sutron 8210 High Data Rate Satellite Collection
Platform, Sutron water level measuring device

East River at Almont

09112500

4

Sutron 8210 High Data Rate Satellite Collection
Platform,

.....~..

Sutron 8210 High Data Rate Satellite Collection
Platform, Sutron Accubar Bubble Gauge water level
measuring device
:1Q:A:~~~~:f:ii~:m,~:~~W)&;{i~~@::::::::;:::;:::::g:::::::::n::::::non:QJ:~ftf{?::::::;::::~~:;:::~:::~~mhi~:::::K;;:_&#i;;~~:i:~~~~~1J::t8.$~:~:~~lr~~:;:M1Wt~~;~~fili~&.rn);;::::::::::::::::

Cimarron River Near Cimarron

09126000

4
