Denver
Water has been very supportive of these water efficient plumbing s~ndards, and
the urban water supply community throughout the West has a stake in ensuring
that there will be no rollback of the Federal mandate. The repeal of the water
conserving plumbing fixture standard would handicap the water and energy
conservation efforts of our utility and other utilities throughout the West, and hurt
impon:ant long-range water supply planning efforts.

Denver Water is the whOlesale and retail water provider to almost 1,000,000
people within a 324 sql.lare mile service area, including all of !he City and County
of Denver and portions of several adjoining counties. In 1996 Denver Water
treated and delivered 76,203,960.000 gallons of water.
Denlr'er Water has been working toward conse/'llation and wise water use since
the organization was formed in 1916. In fact, the term .Xeriscape" [landscaping
for water conservation) was created by Denver Water in 1991, and the nation's
first Xeriscape Demonstration Garden was installed at Denver Waters
headquarters.

Denver Water recently completed a three-year Integrated Resource Planning
process (lRP) aimed at identifying Mure demands for water and determining the
best way to meet these demands. Results of the IRP show that Denver Water
will need an additional 100,000 acre-feet of water annually in order to meet the
total demand by 2045, when all areas which Denver Water is contractually
obligated to serve are fully developed. In October 1996 the Board of Water

CONSERVE
