.,.,.5

Mr. Dutcher: "Some
on a reconnaissance
those that have not

of these projects have been investigated
basis. Would those have preference to
been investigated at all?"

.
Mr. Crawford: . "Those that have been investigated are
supposed to be the most promising. What we try to find
out is which one should be. investigated further. This
committee over in your neighborhood said Fruitland Mesa
was first."

.
Mr. Peterson: "At the meeting we held prior to the date
of that resolution Delta and Montrose counties. got. together
in a meeting inasmuch as the area was in a critical position.
One of the reasons why the Fruitland Mesa was put in first
was because they are short of water every year. This is
the best soil we have in the country. Their fields now
are as brown as the floor. They are in bad shape. There
just isn't any water this year and all the entire area is
going to be short of water. Therefore., we put that first. U

Mr. Crawford: "Early. this spring I sent out a tabulation
giving data on units of the Cliffs-Divide project as well
as those of the Gunnison River." . . .

Mr. Moses: "I don't find this West Divide."

Mr. Crawford: "The West Divide has a. cost ratiof of less
than 1.0."

Mr. Merriell: "I have some comment on the Colorado River
water situation. There is on the Williams a plan by the
City of Denver to abandon the Jones Pass tunnel and move
down 1,000 feet in elevation. The Parshall unit and the
city of Denver are competitive for the water of Williams
River. With regard to the West Divide Project,. that is
a scheme of using the water out of Crystal to supply a
large area of land west. I have another proposition that
I would like this Board to understand. I think Ican make
it plain without a map. (Mr. Merriell discussed the
Moffat Tunnel.) 1934 was the worst year we ever had until
this year and that was pretty bad. Only 4,000,000 acre-
feet of water got to Lee Ferry. You cannot depend upon
Colorado River without adequate storage."

475

I

I
