MR. STAPLETON:

MR. JENNINGS:

This testimony did go back for the Senate
II,terior and Insular Affairs COIlUllittee on amend-
ments to the Small projects Act'..'

"Any other comments?

We'll now turn to Region 4 and, Bob Jen-
nings, will you make that report, please?"

"Hr. Chairman, members of the Board, and
gentlemen, my report is in the usual form,
taking up Construction, Investigations and a
Report on Small Projects.

We start off first with the larger Storage
units. Inasmuch as three of the storage units
are either completed or substantially completed,
water is being stored in these units. We are
at the start of our spring runoff. I think
maybe it is appropriate to go into the problems
involved in the filling of these reservoirs.
First on Glen Canyon, on this structure the dam
proper will be topped out some time this summer.
At the present time several of the blocks have
reached the crest elevation, there is less than
120,000 cubic yards of concrete yet to be placed
in the dam proper. The turbines and generators
are being installed in the powerhouse under the
completion contract, and structure foundation
excavation work continues in the switchyard area.

The right tunnel has been permanently
plugged, and the gates in the left tunnel of
Glen Canyon were throttled to a discharge of
1,000 c.f.s. on March 13th. With Lake Mead at
a high favorable level, we are permitting Lake
Powell to slowly begin to fill. A release of
1,000 c.f.s. fOr one year would produce about
three-quarters of the annual minimum release of
1,000,000 acre-feet required under the filling
criteria. It is planned that the discharge will
be increased to about 2,500 c.f.s. to make up the
balance during the months of July and August--the
period of heavy visitation to Grand Canyon
National Park. At the present time Glen Canyon
contains about 700,000 acre-feet of water and
has a depth of about 140 feet. Now based on a

I

.

I
