recommendation for this large permanent pool was worked out with the
cooperation of the National Park Service and the Colorado Division of
Parks. AlsD on the slide are the various surface areas at maximum pool,
the shoreline, and the surface area at the inactive pool, and that is
526 acres.

I

One of the first construction activities will be the relocation of U.S.
Highway 550 around the reservoir. This relocation will follow Cow
Creek around the reservoir for a distance before cutting back to the
existing alignment. The location of the highway has been a cooperative
effort between the Bureau of Reclamation, the Colorado State Highwar
Department and wildlife agencies. Included in the contract when it s
let will be fencing and game underpasses constructed as required along
both sides of the relocated highway in order to minimize auto-big game
collisions. The,length of this relocation is approximately five miles.

The proposed recreation sites of the reservoir have undergone thorough
investigation and research. The Bureau has hired a landscape architect
firm of Phillip E. Flores Associates DO work out recreation proposals
and for the location of recreation sites.

Now, this map is one. of theirs. It shows some of their initial studies,
one recreation site near Cow Creek and below the reservoir located in
this area, a second site opposite the Alkali Creek arm of the reservoir,
there's an Dverview site near the relocated highway, and a fourth site
near the old town of Dallas. These are the initial alternatives of the
recreational sites. They are recommending now a principal site on the
Alkali arm, with a site also for recreation near the junction of Cow
Creek and the Uncompahgre River.

This is a slide view of the principal recreation site on the Alkali arm
of the reservoir. This site wDuld have boat rampS, campgrounds and
other facilities to take care of the visitations to the reservoir.

I

In order to enhance fishing opportunit~es Which the reservoir would
make possible on the river, fishing easements would be acquired along
both sides of the Uncompahgre River fDr about twelve miles immediately
below tpe Ridgway Dam, to such an extent that such easements could be
secured from property owners on a negotiated basis.

This slide gives/you a general view of the Uncompahgre River downstream
from the Ridgway Dam. About 1,000 acres of rangeland would be purchased
or acquired as a part of the project somewhere within the tri-county
area of Delta, Montrose and Ouray Counties as an intensive game manage-
ment are? to offset the loss to wildlife habitat of about 1,000 acres
of public lands which would be within the take line of the Ridgway
Reservoir and the highway relocatiDn.

Steps have been ta~n for the abandonment of the Denver & Rio Grande
spur line from Montrose to Ridgway. This abandonment has been approved,
and the use of the railroad will be discontinued prior to constructiDn
of the Ridgway Dam.

A large portion of the project water supply, some 28,100 acre-feet, will

-3-
