page 2

the studies. The committee, an all volunteer group, has received support

and financial help from the Colorado River l{ater Conservation District,

Glenwood Springs, enabling the committee to publish an attractive brochure

and to hold necessary support meetings. The committee has likewise worked

closely with the Bureau of Reclamation, the Grand Junction and Delta Chambers

of Commerce and have received their full cooperation.

4. As a result of project investigations, two structural plans have been

selected f~r presentation as candidate plans in the project reports. The

Peaking Power Plan "as originally selected as the recommended plan; however,

recent studies indicated reduced need for peaking power and an apparent

need for municipal and industrial water for energy development. Studies

also showed that several other projects would be more cost effective in

providing peaking power. The Municipal and Industrial (M&I) Water Plan

was formulated in response to this shift in proj ected needs. In the ~1&I

Water Plan, the Rim Basin peaking power complex would be deleted and

Dominguez Dam would be raised 50 feet. The larger dam and reservoir would

justify an increase in baseload po~erplant capacity from 18 ~IT{ to 36 ~lW.

The larger reservoir would also ensure a firm 221,200 acre-feet M&I water

supply for energy development. In view of current government budget restraints

the plan with the lower total project cost--the M&I Water Plan-- appears more

justified and has received our advisory committee's full support.

5. Western Colorad? is a major contribution to the economy of the State of

Colorado; however, if it were not ror far-sighted people many years ago who

were responsible for the construction of reservoirs on the various streams

and their tributaries above Grand Junction to supply industrial water, the

Grand Junction area would not have irrigation and domestic and industrial

water and today would be only a railroad switchyard and a trading post.
