I

I

The need for additional recreational facilities is evident from the
increasing number of cars pulling boats that leave the Denver metro-
politan area each weekend and clog the plains reservoirs.

We believe that the Narrows is an exceptional project. It should
have been built years ago. It is important that it be constructed
today, and we strongly urge this board to give it the highest prior-
ity among authorized reclamation projects in Colorado and all assis-
tance possible in obtaining funding for the project in fiscal year
1974. We have been to Washington and we have talked with our Congress-
men this year. We are prepared to go again, and again, and again,
if that is necessary so that we can get this on the way.

Before questions, perhaps it would be best, Mr. Chairman, if Mr. Smee
would talk for a moment and then we can answer any questions con-
cerning the project.

Mr. Stapleton: All right.

Mr. Smee: Thank you very much, Monte. Mr. Chairman, gentlemen, the
extent of my remarks will be in direct proportion to our interest in
the Narrows Reservoir. Therefore, they will be very brief. The
Central Colorado Water Conservancy District includes about 255,000
acres of land in the area beginning north of the Denver city limits
extending along the east side of the Platte River, almost to Kersey.
Approximately 108,000 acres of this land is irrigated by five ditch
companies and approximately l,200 wells. The income from agriculture
and agriculture related business is very important to this area.
The fact that the state engineer is required by law to curtail the
wells in this region makes it doubly important that we get your help
in pushing the Narrows project without delay.

Central has 15,000 acre-feet of decreed water in this project and it
will go a long way to satisfying senior surface irrigators and to
enable our wells to operate as they are needed to irrigate the
crops.

We therefore request that you report favorably on this project.
Thank you very much.

Mr. Stapleton: All right. Now what questions do members of the board
have on the Narrows project?

Mr. Ford: Are they going to quit looking at western slope water?

-56-
