I

I

concludes our presentation. Thank you very much for your time.

Mr. Stapleton: I understood that Dr. Herrick was here. who might
want to say something. is that correct or not?

Dr. Herrick: Mr. Chairman. I really wasn't prepared to make a state-
ment. but I appreciate the chance. I am a new member of the Dolores
Water Conservancy District. having only been a member for the past
week. So anything I say may be a little unrehearsed and spontaneous.
I am a member of the Cortez City Council. Consequently. my major
interest of course is in domestic water. As the gentlemen from the
Tri-County area made their presentation this morning.. the thought
occurred to me very strongly that we are faced in the Dolores Con-
servancy District with exactly the same thing that they have faced
in the past ten years - this pyramiding experience of the necessity
of domestic and industrial water. We have on a smaller scale an
entirely similar situation. We have a small rural domestic system with
people just crying to be allowed on the system. With new taps a
gross insufficiency of water for that system. all of the municipal~.
ities and all the small towns. the tribal headquarters at Towaoc.
there isn't a domestic. municipal water supply system in our area
that is not already in trouble of some sort or another. Mr. Kinkade
alluded briefly to the study made by Morcan Engineering Company. I
presume it subsequently will be made available to you. It goes into
the difficulties of our domestic water situation in the Dolores Con-
servancy District. Thank you.

Mr. Stapleton: Thank you. Dr. Herrick. Now are there any further
presentations that you would like to make before I make you all avail-
able for questions? All right. are there any questions then in
regard to the Dolores project that any members of the board would
like to address?

Mr. Kroeqer: I would like to ask one question. Under the environ-
mental impact statement it has been reported that. and I quote. "the
very scenic canyon of the Dolores River will be inundated in the
loss of scenic area and aesthetic damage from the construction."
Now what I want you to tell me is. how long is the Dolores Canyon.
approximately? Is it ten miles. 100 miles. 150 miles?

Mr. Tvner: There are 168 miles of the river below McPhee damsite.

Mr. Kroeqer: The point I wanted to make is that this infers that
the Dolores Canyon will be inundated and it is essentially 8 or 9

-36-
