.3,.3

not take a vote on it there. It was probably about equal. I think
nearly every ranchman along that river was present. I don't believe
there were three or four absent out of those two meetings. One
thing they brought up was - is this to be used as a trading point
to give Denver 177,000 acre-feet? They can see further ahead than
some of us sometime. Most of those people want to stay. there and
farm with their neighbors. They do not care about going out and
settling in a new country.

Mr. Beaty: "How many farm units are there?"

I

Mr. Pughe: "I would say about 40. It might be $0 farm units in
that area".

Senator Williams: "Do you have IlIlY idea how much of that land the
Government owns?"

Mr. Pughe: "Very little. The map dpes not show what the acreage
is of that reservoir. II

Mr. Debler: "It would be around 20,000 acres".

Mr. Pughe: "It would be more than that. What's the acreage of
Echo Park?"

Mr. Debler: "About 30,000 acres.1I

Mr. Penfold: "I believe the acreage is 48,000".

Mr. Pughe: "I think it is more than that".

Mr. Crawford: "I am sending Mr. Gildersleeve over for the report".

Mr. Debler: "In these reservoir sites there has been an appraisal of
those lands. However, in a great many cases those appraisals are not
accepted. The Judge, through condemnation proceedings,' sets the
value of. those places."

Mr. Crawford: "$2,200 acres at Cross llountain under the 29$ foot
dam."

Mr. Bailey: "Does anyone have any questions of Mr. Pughe?D

Mr. Pughe:
(Mr. Pughe
area. )

"That's a pretty decent group of people dcwln there".
explained the economic situation in the Cross Mountain

I

1.Ir'. Moses: "It seems to me that they are.going to have difficulty
buying the location".

!Jr. Pughe: "Your Echo Park will dislocate only three or four".

(ConSiderable discussion was had regarding condemnation and payments
as concerned with valuation of lands in reservoir sites. Discussion
followed concerning tax loss to the counties.)
