I

I

bypasses out of Lake Powell this winter and
that they will continue until mid-July when
Lake 14ead attains the maximum level for the
generation of power. Could you be more speci-
fic on roughly how much has been released or
is projected to be released from now until
July? I know you are guessing on the runoff:
I realize that."

MR. JENNINGS:

"I might put it this way, there are three
means of getting water past Lake powell. One
is to run it through the turbines: one is to
run it through the outlet works: and the third
way is to run it through the bypass tunnel,
the tunnel that was constructed through the
left abutment to bypass flows during the con-
struction of the dam. Now a combination of
all of those facilities will handle approxi-
mately 50,000 acre-feet of water, with the
bypass tunnel handling about 25,000, I think
about 12,000 through the turbines, and the
rest through the outlet works.

In order to maintain Lake Powell a~ about
an elevation of 3,490, they will first give
priority to running all the water through the
turbines and make all the power that they can:
they will then use the outlet works to keep
the reservoir at that level: and whatever else
they have to do they will run through this
bypass tunnel. But under the criteria that is
established they intend to hold Lake Powell at
elevation 3,490 until they get Lake Mead up to
its rated head. It will take approximately
3,300,000 acre-feet to get Mead back up to
rated head."

MR. ECKLES:

"When the projected level of Lake Mead in
July is at the acceptable elevation (I do not
know the figures) but projecting the figures
of the runoff, what will be the amount of water
stored in Lake Powell in July?"

MR. JENNINGS:

"After we reach that rated head at Lake
Mead, and made the regular bypasses it is antici-
pated that we will get about 2,000,000 acre-feet
