had authority to acquire that channel, we
were successful in securing an amendment to
the statute creating this Board which permits
this Board to acquire the necessary rights-of-
way, either by purchase, bequest, gift, or
condemnation. Since several municipalities
and several counties are involved in this
right-of-way, we hope to form a coordinating
committee among the municipalities and counties
involved to the end that we can start negotia-
tions for the securing of this right-of-way.
We hope that most of it can be secured by
gift actually, since we thinJt it is of benefit
to the property owners to have this channel
properly controlled. We are also worJdng with
the Metropolitan Recreation District or some-
thing by that name, to the end that some
beautification can be done in connection with
the channel improvement through this eight
miles.

In any event, we have a most formidable
task ahead of us in getting these projects
under way. From time to time we may have to
have some of the Board members sit in on some
of the negotiations which will start within
the next few months. We are getting the
utmost cooperation from the Omaha District
of the Corps of Engineers. They have now
established an office in Denver and are pro-
ceeding with their initial land acquisitions
to start the preliminary construction.

In the following years we will have to
have appropriations something in the magni-
tude of $20 million to $30 million to sustain
the going program. This project, as the Board
will recall, will cost in excess of $80 million
and is greater in size than any flood control
project heretofore constructed in Colorado.

The Mount Carbon Dam and Reservoir plans,
which our staff considers just as essential
as the Chatfield project, are now well ad-
vanced. We hope that in the very near future
we can present that to Congress for authoriza-
tion. Currently that project report is being
