<br />I <br /> <br />had authority to acquire that channel, we <br />were successful in securing an amendment to <br />the statute creating this Board which permits <br />this Board to acquire the necessary rights-of- <br />way, either by purchase, bequest, gift, or <br />condemnation. Since several municipalities <br />and several counties are involved in this <br />right-of-way, we hope to form a coordinating <br />committee among the municipalities and counties <br />involved to the end that we can start negotia- <br />tions for the securing of this right-of-way. <br />We hope that most of it can be secured by <br />gift actually, since we thinJt it is of benefit <br />to the property owners to have this channel <br />properly controlled. We are also worJdng with <br />the Metropolitan Recreation District or some- <br />thing by that name, to the end that some <br />beautification can be done in connection with <br />the channel improvement through this eight <br />miles. <br /> <br />In any event, we have a most formidable <br />task ahead of us in getting these projects <br />under way. From time to time we may have to <br />have some of the Board members sit in on some <br />of the negotiations which will start within <br />the next few months. We are getting the <br />utmost cooperation from the Omaha District <br />of the Corps of Engineers. They have now <br />established an office in Denver and are pro- <br />ceeding with their initial land acquisitions <br />to start the preliminary construction. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />In the following years we will have to <br />have appropriations something in the magni- <br />tude of $20 million to $30 million to sustain <br />the going program. This project, as the Board <br />will recall, will cost in excess of $80 million <br />and is greater in size than any flood control <br />project heretofore constructed in Colorado. <br /> <br />The Mount Carbon Dam and Reservoir plans, <br />which our staff considers just as essential <br />as the Chatfield project, are now well ad- <br />vanced. We hope that in the very near future <br />we can present that to Congress for authoriza- <br />tion. Currently that project report is being <br />
