Through the efforts <br />of Congressman Rogers of~he 1st District and <br />congressman Brotzman of the 2nd District, the <br />districts primarily affected by this project, <br />and through the efforts of Senators Dominick I <br />and Allott, an additional $3 million was <br />recommended by the Bureau of thE! Budget. Ne <br />anticipate that something slightly in excess <br />of $10 mi'llion will be approved by . the con- <br />gress. This would permit the first phase of <br />the construction to get under way sometime <br />late this summer. <br /> <br />Governor Love also presented testimony <br />to the House Appropriations committee just <br />this week, urging the support of the appropria- <br />tions for the Chatfield Project. <br /> <br />This project will cause us the greatest <br />difficulty of any project ever yet constructed <br />in the State of colorado. It's on a different <br />scale and a different magnitude of anything <br />that we have yet experienced. This is because <br />we are building a rather large project in a <br />metropolitan area which involves the reloca- <br />tion of several hundred people and the reloca- <br />tion of railroads, highways, bridges, ditches, <br />ditch headings, and the waterworks which are <br />part of the waterworks of the city of Denver. <br />So this will be a most difficult project to <br />work out all of the many problems that will <br />occur. However, there is no doubt but what <br />they will be worked out, although undoubtedly <br />not to everyone's satisfaction. <br /> <br />Ne also have the grave problem of the <br />tremendous gravel deposits which occur in <br />the reservoir site. The legislature enacted <br />a memorial to the congress requesting that I <br />some plan be worked out so that these deposits <br />could be extracted. , <br /> <br />We have the further problem that the <br />state must furnish the right-oi-way fOr ~out <br />eight miles of channel, immediately below the <br />reservoir site.
