Foundation exploration at the 3 dam
sites was completed in June of 1968.
Based on the results of the foundation
explorations, detailed design of the 3
Bijou Creek dam sites has been initiated.
Studies are being made to determine ground
water recharge potential of the 3 dams.
The 3 dams in the Bijou Creek basin would I
control about 70 percent of the basin's
1,500 square mile drainage area. prelimi- .
nary studies indicated that about 75 per- .
cent of the flood control benefits attri-
butable to the Bijou Creek dams would
result from the reduction of flood damage
potentials along the South Platte River.
The remaining 25 percent of the flood
control benefits would result from flood
damage reduction in the Bijou Creek basin.
Total cost of the 3-dam system is estimated
to be about $40 million.

Local interests at Deer Trail, in
July 1968, requested an investigation of
the town's flood problem under provisions
of Section 205 of the 1948 Flood Control
Act, as amended. The reconnaissance in-
vestigation is essentially complete, and
it appears that a levee would be economi-
cally feasibile. Local interests have
been asked if they can provide the necessary
local cooperation, but they have indicated
a preference for an upstream reservoir.

The Corps' studies in the Bijou Creek
basin have been separated from the South
Platte River investigation. An interim
report covering the Bijou Creek basin is
scheduled for completion in late 1969.
Studies are currently under way to deter-
mine if alternatives of the 3-dam system
are practicable. One alternative being I
investigated includes a dam on East Bijou
Creek near Agate and a dam on Middle Bijou
Creek downstream from Highway 36. If the
