I

at the downstream end of the conduit. The
reservoir would be provided with an earth-
cut spillway in the left abutment of the
dam. There would be no permanent pool for
recreation, but the reservoir would be
developed for land-based recreation. The
total cost of the project is estimated to
be $17,244,000.

Land adjoining the channel area between
the proposed Sond Creek Dam and East Col-
fax Avenue in Aurora would be acquired and
used for open-space recreation development.
The channel from East Colfax Avenue down-
stream to the South Platte River would be
enlarged increasing its minimum capacity
from 4,000 cubic feet per second to 13,000
cubic feet per second. This improvement
would increase the degree of flood protec-
tion in the Sand Creek basin by providing
channel capacity to carry the runoff from
the drainage area downstream from the dam.
The estimated cost of channel improvement
is $8,600,000.

Total cost of the improvements in
both basins is estimated to be $91.637,000.

I

After the June 1965 flood, the Omaha
District investigated potential dam sites
in the Bijou Creek basin. Each of the
potential dam sites was screened to deter-
mine if potential benefits would exceed
the costs. The screening process revealed
that 7 of the 10 sites investigated were
economically infeasible. However three
sites appear at this time to have economic
feasibility. They include the West Bijou
dam, located on West Bijou Creek near
Byers; the Middle Bijou Creek dam, located
at the confluence of Middle and East Bijou
Creeks, and the Muddy Creek dam, located
on Muddy Creek just downstream from High-
way 36.
