707

I

A contract is being negotiated with the Utah State
Road Commission for the construction of an access road from
the Vernal-Manila road to the Flaming Gorge dam site, a dis-
tance of about 7 miles. This road will be used as the perma-
nent access road for the operation and maintenance of the
Flaming Gorge Dam and Powerplant after completion of construc-
tion.

Curecant i Unit

Recent investigations of the Curecanti Unit have
disclosed that a higher dam at Morrow Point. which will in-
clude the entire Narrow Gauge Reservoir basin in conjunction
with dams at Blue Mesa and Crystal, will be a favorable plan
for developing the power potential of the upper Gunnison
River. However, we are also evaluating another two-dam plan,
consisting of dams at the Crystal and Narrow Gauge sites.
Collection of field data for the two-dam plan will probably
not be completed before the fall of 1957. However, rather
than wait until the additional data are gathered, the Bureau
will report on the three-dam plan in the report scheduled
for completion in June, 1957.

During the past year detailed designs have been
prepared by the Chief Engineer for various types of dams at
Narrow Gauge. Blue Mesa, and Morrow Point. A more detailed
design for a dam at the Crystal site is now being prepared.
Detailed dam site topography for the Crystal and the Morrow
Point sites was completed during ~~rch, 1957 and December,
1956 respectively. A more detailed estimate for a trans-
mission network to deliver project energy to local markets
in western Colorado and northwestern New Mexico has also been
prepared. Alternative steam costs for these areas were also
revised and brought up to date using latest Federal Power Com-
mission data.

)

A temporary field office has been established at
Cimarron which will be used for office and storage quarters
during this summer while collecting field data for the com-
pletion of the special report programmed for completion within
the next two months, and for the definite plan report to be
completed later. Mr. William H. Culp who is to be in charge
of the field work will be at Cimarron about l~y 16.

Navajo Unit

Extensive borrow-area investigations and a founda-
tion exploration program are being conducted at the site of
the potential Navajo Dam to obtain field data needed for the
design of the dam.
