?
r
,
.1

Mr. Bernklau Introduced the District's attorney, Mr. Russell

I
1
!
;

George from Rifle, Colorado, and provided a written statement

.

to the Board for its consideration (see Appendix I). Mr.

1

Bernklau proceeded to review the hIstory of the West Divide

1

project and the problems whIch had confronted it. He urged

the Board to request Congress to include a small amount of

funding in the Federal FY 1982 budget to continue planning on

the project in order to keep it alive. Mr. George also spoke

briefly about the project and the need to continue planning

on it. He also presented to the Board a letter of support

for the project from the Mayor of the City of Rifle (see
Appendix J) and a statement from the Rifle Chamber of

Commerce which also supported continuing analysis of the West

Divide project (see Appendix K).

Mr. Kroeger then called upon Mr. Dick Stirkel, President

of the FruItland Mesa Water Conservancy District. Mr.

Stirkel presented a statement on the Fruitland Mesa project

(see Appendix L), noting that it was his opinion that the

project needed to be replanned with some municipal water in

order to make it feasible. He suggested that the Board

should support a request in the amount of $150,000 in the

Federal FY 1982 budget in order to support continuing

planning on the project. In response to a question from a
,

member of the Board, Mr< Rinkel)indicated that a draft
-'
definite plan report had been prepared some time ago on the

Fruitiand Mesa project but it had never been released.

-6-

~
