Work on the canals will be reswned by the contractor in a few <br />days. Due to excessive moisture conditions.in the earth borrow pits, <br />work on the dam embankment will not be started until after the first <br />of May. No unusual deIa;}' is anticipated due to the deliveljl of <br />materials or equipment to be furnished by the United States. <br /> <br />I <br /> <br />Status of Paonia Project. Information for the preparation of <br />designs and specifications for the Spring Creek Dam has been supplied <br />to the Chief Engineer and the estimated date for issuing specifications <br />.covering the construction of Spring Creek Dam is about June I, 1948. <br />The storage capacity of the reservoir will be 14,000 acre feet. Fonn <br />of repayment contract is being reviewed by the Commissioner and depart- <br />mental approval, as to fom, is expected in a week or 10 days. The <br />fom of repayment contract as approved by the Secretary and the Com- <br />missioner will be submitted immediately to the water users for con- <br />sideration. Upon approval of the form of repayment contract by the <br />water users association, awards will be made for construction of 12 <br />Government housing units at Paonia and for .sewerage, water distribu- <br />tion and drainage systems and street and sidewalks for the Government <br />Camp from bids opened March 12 and MaI'l::h 19, 1948. It is anticipated <br />that specifications will be issued about August 1, 1948 for co~st:r:uction <br />of Schedule No. I of the Fire Mountain Canal. <br /> <br />Status of Pine River Froject Extension. The field draft of the <br />report has been completed and is now being reviewed in the Regional <br />Office. It is expected that the report will be rorwarded to the <br />Commi~sionerls office for consideration within the next 30 days. <br /> <br />Status of La Plata Project. All basic data for the economics <br />study have been assembled. Two chapters of the substa,ntiating materials <br />on "Designs and Estimates" and "Alternative Plans" have been revised in <br />preliminary draft fomi. It is anticipated that a field draft on the <br />La Plata units will be completed this swmner. <br /> <br />Status of Collbran Project. Geologic studies, reservoir operation <br />studies, power stUdies, and economic studies of repayment ability have <br />been completed. Preliminary designs and estimates for the Bonham <br />Reservoir, pipeline collection system, and Southside Canal are being <br />reviewed. <br /> <br />Completion of the field draft of the project report is expected by <br />the end of May. <br /> <br />Status of Silt Project. A report on the Silt Project was submitted <br />to the Commissioner in September 1947, with a finding that 86 years would <br />be required to fully repay construction costs, for which reason construction <br />under existing economic conditions was not recommended. Since the indicated <br />re~ent period is not greatly in eXCess of the indicated period for some <br />other projects which have been authorized by Congress, it is now intended <br />that economic studies and land classification will be further refined when <br />funds become available in the next fiscal year, with the view that <br />it might be possible to submit a report recommending project authorization. <br /> <br />I <br />
