health, we have extensive Department of Health resumes and surveys, and
all of it is detrimental.

I

The growth in the area has been approximately twenty percent, I would
say in the town, approxima~ely twenty percent a year, which is something.
We have a water moritorium on the outer town limits, the outskirts. /'..
And until we get a'new system in, we can't have any new growth that way.
I don't.know whether we necessarily want it or not, but it's there.
We have had uo turn down one large multiple unit, something like this
Holiday Inn type of thing, that wanted to ~o into the outer edge of
the town, also a large supermarket. I don, t know just what type, but
on the type of King Soopers or Safeway or something.

We do have an annexation program incorporating all the outer reaches
that we can. I made the trip to Craig and to the other impacted areas
and learned a tremendous amount of what not to do and what to do, if
possible, as far as meters, plans, and so forth like that. Since we
don't have something in that area, we need control from the standpoint
of services for the town of Hotchkiss..

The town of Hotchkiss right now is getting to be kind of a bedroom type
of thing for one of the large mines, Westmoreland. I think most of
you, if you are aware of the impact in the area - the growth, I don't
have to go into that from the standpoint of the mines, which are
anticipated opening~ And some of them, I am beginning to find out for
myself, are just practically back of town.

Incidentally, when you were discussing the,Overland~ if I could go
back to that for a minute, I know that they might need water'from that,
and I was wondering how this ten percent business could affect them
and whether they would get it from the Overland or not. But Westmore-
land is having its water problems in drilling wells up there. They
are falling short of their goals. They're going.to have to take agri-
cultural water, as I understand it from talking to them the other day.
Water is a very definite priority in our community. We certainly need
your help in the construction of our system.

MR. STAPLETON: Any questions?
(No response.)
Hearing none, thank you very much, Mr. Mayor.

MR. LEINSDORF: Mr. Chairman, I move approval of this project.
MR. BENTON: I will second it~

I

MR. STAPLETON: Any further discussion? All in favor, signify by
saying "Aye."

(Unanimous "Ayes.")

MR. STAPLETON: Opposed?
(No response.)

-41-
