MR. WOODSON:

"Mr. Chairman and members of the Board,
our report is quite brief so with your per-
mission I'll read the two principal items.

'Funds in the amount of $750,000 have
been made available for initiation of con- I
struction of the Trinidad project in Fiscal
Year 1965. These funds will permit acquisi-
tion of lands for the outlet works, initiation
of construction of the outlet works, and pre-
paration of plans and specifications for
other project features. Construction of the
outlet works is scheduled to start shortly
after January 1965. This schedule, of course,
is contingent upon the consummation of an
irrigation repayment contract at an early date.
Close coordination is being maintained with
the Purgatoire River Water Conservancy District
and the Bureau of Reclamation concerning the
repayment contract in order to maintain con-
struction schedules and assure continuing
appropriations for completion of construction.

Investigations and studies for flood
control and allied purposes have been continued
on the Arkansas River in Colorado. As pre-
viously reported, these investigations will
give consideration to single- and multiple-
purpose reservoirs, major drainage, channel-
ization, levees, floodways, and the eradication
of phreatophytes in the streambeds. Coordina-
tion of potential projects has been initiated
with other federal and state agencies, and it
is anticipated that a report on the study
above John Martin Dam will be completed by the
end of Fiscal Year 1965.'

I might add to that that we are studying
intensively a proposal for channel rectifica-
tion of the Arkansas River between Pueblo and
John Martin Dam which has a potential of short-
ening the length of the river between 20 and
25 percent.
