MR. STAPLETON:

In the Arkansas Valley mass measurements
of water levels in about 1000 wells were made
in early August and again the first week in
October. These have shown changes in water
level during the irrigation season. The
project Chief on our Arkansas Valley study
will have more to report at a later point
in the program.

Wells were inventoried, water levels
measured, and geologic test holes were augured
in the Quaternary deposits in the Black Squirrel
Valley east of Colorado Springs. About 750 to
1,000 acre-feet of water was 'exported from the
Black Squirrel Valley each month during the
past summer. The data collected will describe
the limits and characteristics of the aquifer
and will enable future predictions of water-
level changes that may be made.

A report entitled 'Mineral and Water Re-
sources of Colorado' has recently been released.
The report was prepared by the Geological
Survey and agencies of the State of Colorado
at the request of Senator Allott. It was re-
leased as a Committee Print of the Committee
on Interior and Insular Affairs, United States
Senate, 88th Congress, 2d Session. A few copies
are available for distribution by the Geologi-
cal Survey. The Colorado Mining Industrial
Development Board will have, it is my under-
standing, several cop!es for distribution and
I am sure additional copies could be obtained
from Senator Allott's office.
