Sustained, high-quality, drought-related research and innovation that stems from <br />individual, local, state, and regional drought planning needs and effective transfer and <br />application of research results <br /> <br />The objective is to provide the technical foundation for drought planning and impact-reduction <br />measures that address the social, economic, and environmental impacts of drought. <br /> <br />Recommendations <br /> <br />u Establish a national commitment to high-priority, drought-related research at universities, <br />research institutions, and other relevant organizations across the country to diversifY and build <br />regional research capacity. <br />u Stakeholders should be consulted and asked to identifY research gaps based on their needs <br />in setting the federal drought research agenda. <br />u Drought-related research entities should set a high standard in increasing their efforts at <br />sharing drought-related research and research findings. <br />u Opportunities should be found for undergraduate and graduate students and on-the-job <br />trainees to work with local, state, regional, and tribal planning bodies, with scientists conducting <br />drought-related research, and with the people providing drought-related training and technical <br />assistance. <br />u Continued participation by the federal govemment in international drought research and <br />education programS should be encouraged and supported. <br />u <br /> <br />u <br />
