MR. SPARKS:

"1:1e are very happy to have you, :Mr. McColm
and Mr. Rogers.

From the United States Geological Survey
we have Mr. \'1ally Miller and Mr. Frank Bell.
Will you two gentlemen stand? They are the
gentlemen who run our stream gauging program
throughout the State of Colorado, and maintain
the records on the Gunnison River among others.

I would like to give a very brief resume
of the Curecanti Project and what we can ex-
pect in the way of construction and when it
will happen and so on. If I make any mis-
takes, we have ample authority here whom I
trust will promptly correct me, both from my
own staff and from the Bureau of Reclamation
staff,

I

I

It is somewhat difficult for you to see
this map which we have prepared. This was
taken from information furnished to us by the
Bureau of Reclamation and by our own State
Highway Department.

First I will take the main unit of this
project, the Curecanti unit, which is the Blue
Mesa Dam. The dam site is just below the
mouth of Black Canyon, just below the community
of Sapinero, This dam is approximately 24
miles in length, if my recollection is correct,
that is, the reservoir is approximately 24
miles in length, and will back water up to
about Cooper's Resort, that is, the high water
mark. You will notice that we have shaded
parts of the reservoir, The parts in the
heavy blue is that part below which the water
is not expected to be drawn. In the recom-
mended operation of this reservoir it provides
that the water shall not be drawn down below
an elevation of 7427 feet. That means that at
its lowest point therefore, there will always
be water up to about lola, As you can see,
Soap Creek and Lake Fork are approximately the
high water for the lowest point to which water
would be drawn. There is virtually no draw-
down during the period from June to October of
each year so this reservoir does not fluctuate
greatly as is the case of most reservoirs that
are used exclusively for irrigation.
