"

Description: Runoff from certain agricultural areas in the lower Arkansas River valley
has a high salt concentration that contributes to the salinity of the Arkansas River at the
state line. This project is designed to encourage irrigators to effectively manage water
use to improve crop yields and water quality, to demonstrate the economic benefits of
using more effective irrigation management practices using improved technology such as
crop planting patterns and rotation, surge irrigation, and Best Management Practices.
Results will be documented by increased crop yields and improvements of irrigation
water including application methods and rehabilitation of existing drainage works.

.

Flood Protection

1. Statewide Drainage/Floodplain Management Criteria Manual

Grantee/Contractor: CWCB

Amount of request: $150,000

Description: To aid in the effort to minimize flood loss vulnerability and related
economic impacts we are planning to prepare a Statewide Drainage/Floodplain
Management Criteria Manual. The manual will help flood managers statewide to map
and designate flood hazard areas, determine streams susceptible to severe erosion and
bank instability, identify flood mitigation measures, prepare floodplain management
plans, and assist local communities to establish consistent guidelines and criteria
regarding flood related engineering standards,

2. CWCB Internet Flood Page and Flood Task Force

Grantee/Contractor: CWCB

Amount of request: $ I 0,000

Description: The Flood Task Force is made up of 15 federal, state and private sector
meteorology and hydrology experts who contribute to an annual Colorado Flood Outlook.
A monthly Flood Outlook Report and daily flood data are posted on the CWCB web
page. The snowmelt runoff data and flood outlooks assist water users and others to
prepare for floods, aid management planning, and aid stream diversion operations to
reduce flood losses.

.

3. Floodplain Mapping

Grantee/Contractor: CWCB

Amount of request: $30,000

Description: The Flood Protection Program's role is to minimize Colorado's flood loss
vulnerability and related economic impacts, This is accomplished by mapping
floodplains, determination of stream hydraulic and hydrologic characteristics, the
identification of 100-year floodplain areas, the preparation of floodplain management
plans, and by assisting local communities to establish flood mitigation measures. We
intend to work on at least two locally cost-shared floodplain mapping projects.

.

Flood Protection. Project Planning & Finance.
