Did one of your
staff members in 59 or 60 come out with the
statement that a 20,000 acre-foot pool would
have the life e~pectancy of seven years as
far as aquatic life was concerned?"

I

"Well, I couldn't answer that one way or
the other, Mr. Milenski, because I don't know
who you are talking about and I don't recall
that I was present when this statement was
made. I will say this, when the matter of
amounts of water was discussed as to what is
necessary in order to sustain fisheries life
in John Martin Reservoir, our biologists say,
of course, that we would like to have as much
water as we can get, but under the present con-
ditions 10,000 acre-feet would sustain fish-
eries. As to the life of the aquatic vegeta-
tion or aquatic organisms in there, I don't
know who made that statement or on what basis
he made it."

"Mr. Chairman."

IIMr. Burr."

"A number of years ago, Mr. Kimball, (I
guess that was his name), of the Fish and
Game Department stated that 10,000 acre-feet
was impractical and they wouldn't be inter-
ested unless there was at least 20,000 acre-
feet. Can you tell me why the Fish and Game
have changed their minds? What caused it?"

"Well, I won't speak for Tom Kimball. He
isn't here. I think at the time, like I say,
I was Regional Manager at the time, we asked
for 20,000 acre-feet because 20,000 acre-feet
would be better than 10,000 or anything less.
The more water the better of course. I think
you gentlemen understand that. I don't think
it's a matter of our changing our minds, sir,
I think that as far as our biologists are
concerned that we felt that 10,000 acre-feet,
with the depth that that would provide at the
elevation that would be on the dam, would be

I
