.JU:7U

MR. STAPLETON:

MR. SPARKS:

MR. STAPLETON:

know. The thing that upset me so were the
projects."

"The reason I asked, we are trying to plan.
As you know, we will be having meetings in
January, March and Mayor June in this fiscal
year. There has been the question raised as
to whether or not we have sufficient travel
funds for the January meeting if the cut is
not restored in this area, and we couldn't have
the March and June meetings. Now June is
traditionally a meeting where we go out to
some part of the community and review the proj-
ects they have and look them over. I think
this has been most helpful, as you and I have
talked about before.

I

Now I would appreciate if some indication
to Mr. Sparks from you as Coordinator could be
made to see what we can do about that travel
cut because this is an imminent part of our
planning, even for the January meeting."

"I might say, Mr. Stapleton, that what we
tried to do, we eliminated two engineering
positions from our staff and asked for one
higher staff position back in return for them
which affected a considerable savings in our
staffing pattern. The result is that we have
not hired anyone. We have simply eliminated
the two engineers' positions and we will accumu-
late a substantial savings in our salaries this
year. I spoke to the Controller sbout attempt-
ing to transfer some of that savings over to
our travel budget. I mentioned that also in
the hearings Saturday before the Budget Com-
mittee and so far there appears to be no objec-
tion to that. If that can be done, we will, I
think, be in a pretty fair condition, and with
what Mr. Eckles has helped us with in getting
the project money back we should be able to get
by for the rest of the year, if money is trans-
ferred from salaries over to our travel."

I

"I might make the suggestion to Mr. Eakes
and others who are interested that Mr. Oakley
