-3676

According to the abstract of this report
'most residents and drillers know that soft
water can be obtained from wells throughout
most of the area described in this report, but
many are not aware of certain factors related
to the development of this water. This report
should be of value in further developing sources
of soft water by showing (1) the approximate
depth of a well needed to tap these supplies;
(2) the range in yields that may be expected;
(3) the range in chemical quality that may be
expected; (4) the depth to which water will
rise in wells; and (5) information on factors
affecting the durability of the supply.'.

I

Another report, 'Geology and Occurrence of
Ground Water in Otero county and the Southern
Part of Crowley County' was released to the open
file on September 20th. This report was pre-
pared in cooperation with this Board and
describes the occurrence and availability of
ground-water supplies in the area. Pending
publication as Survey Water-Supply paper,
typed copies may be examined in tbeoffices
of the Geological Survey out at the Federal
Center. This is the Ground Water Branch which
is still at the Federal Center. And also in
the office of the Colorado Water Conservation
Board.

Of the 14 water-bearing units in the
area, only 5 contribute significantly to the
water supply. The unconsolidated terrace
deposits along the Arkansas River are the
chief source of ground water for irrigation
and municipal supplies. Although heavily de-
veloped, they contain enough water at present
to supply more large-capacity wells. The
unconsolidated valley-fill deposits are another
source for medium- to large-capacity wells.

I

Another report, 'Effects of Water Manage-
ment on a Reach of the Arkansas Valley, La
Junta to Las Animas, Colorado', was released
to the open file on October 22nd. Pending
publication as Circular 10 of the Colorado
Ground-Water Series it may be examined in the
