I

I

MR. STAPLETON:

MR. SPARKS:

0,

MR. MOSES:

MR. SPARKS:

jb7j'

at least two major control structures on the
river which are probably beyond the means of
the conservancy district to handle; also the
rechannelization of the San Antonio River below
the Taos Valley Canal heading. This is the
point at which they lose a considerable portion
of the water in the spring which is, of course,
the large runoff from the San Antonio. A lot
of it is dissipated, not only to the south
toward Cove Lake and that area, but some of it
also spreads out to the north and over an expan-
sion of land covered with phreatophytes. So
they feel that a control structure at this point
is highly desirable since at the present time
there is little or no control of the river.
There are two channels above that, where the
channels divide, a bifurcation of the channel,
with decrees on each section. It is impossible
for the water officials or the ditch superin-
tendents or anyone else to control that water
that goes down those channels to the end that
it might reach the river and thereby afford
some credit and assistance under the compact
commitment.

I merely want to call this to the attention
of the Board because at the meeting that evening
following the day-long inspection they requested
that this matter be brought before this Board
and that if any assistance could be rendered by
this Board that we do so."

"Mr. Sparks. do you have any comment on
what assistance can be rendered'?"

"The Conejos Conservancy District is sponsor-
ing a study by the Bureau of Reclamation on
salvage - I believe on the Conejos. Is that
correct, Ray?"

"Yes.'.

"Mr. Cornelius, I think I wrote you about
that. Did you consult with the Bureau of Recla-
mation on the extent of their study on the
Conejos'? This will work in with some of the
things we have already mentioned."
