I

I

1523

Subsequent correspondence with Mr. Sparks advised us
that Messrs. McClellan and Kuiper are now engaged in the work
required to make the necessary background data available to the
Commission. Whenever, in the judgment of your Director, the.
time is appropriate for the Investigation Commission to com-
mence consideration of this problem, please be advised that we
will be ready to give such assistance as may be deemed necessary.

As the Board members undoubtedly recall, I complimented
you for, and expressed hope that you would continue, the practice
of meeting in various localities throughout the State. At the
same time, I sincerely believe that those of us interested in the
work of the Board should make every effort to meet with you in
the localities of your choosing. Since I do not wish to be con-
spicuous by absence from your Craig meeting, may I explain that
the reason is three-fold: (1) the Investigation Commission
has nothing of an urgent nature to report at this time; (2)
absence from my own office due to recent surgery has created a
backlog which requires attention, and (3) travel to Craig is
more than r have been advised to attempt for the next few weeks.

Respectfully yours,

/s/ J. R. BARKLEY
J. R. Barkley, Chairman
Colorado Water Investigation Commission

In regard to the report from Mr. Larson,
in the memorandum from Larry to the Board dated
June 23rd, the appropriations for investiga-
tion were seriously curtailed, and he recom-
mended, in order to complete these investiga- .
tions, that the State contribute on a coopera-
tive basis, the following appropriations:

Rio Grande Salvage Project
Fruitland Mesa & Bostwick Park
San Miguel Project

$ 10,000
30,000
22,000

MR. SPARKS:

and I think the first order of the Board
would be to act on these recommendations.
Larry, will you give us a report on this?"

"Our funds, as you know, are not suffi-
cient to take up the slack that has been
occasioned by the cut in the Federal appro-
priations to the Bureau. The final appropria-
tion bill has not passed the Congress but in
its present form it would seriously curtail
the general investigation and advance plan-
ning funds. Region 4 has been cut in excess
of $200,000.
