..1.\.J":t~

,

years but it has been about five years
since the hail suppression program first
began in the North Platte Valley around
Scottsbluff; This was conducted by a
number of different contractors, among
them Jim Cook who is now working with the I
Weather Bureau, Mho flew his airplanewith
a silver iodide generator on it into the
clouds and he'd come back all black and
blue, beat up and with a bloody nose. So
far as physical damage, he suffered quite
a bit of damage. Because he had the nerve
to go up and vry this, I think Jim Cook
had the respect of the people in the North
Platte Valley, and also because of some of
these effects and changes in the clouds
that I described to you and of which I
have a few pictures which I passed around
to you here, the people observed that there
was something different going on.

,

Now this has been going on up there
for about five years. It went on through
last year in the North Platte Valley anq
they spent up there on the order of $50,000
or $60,000, again contributed voluntarily.
Well, the word of this passed on down to
the South Platte Valley of Colorado last
year so the group in the South Platte Valley
of Colorado met with the contractor (it~s
not the same one) in the South Platte Valley
last year about the middle of May and the
contractor orfered to develop a .programof
hail suppression in the South Platte Valley
from Sterling on towards the northeast for
a price, oh, I don't know, but on the order
of $40,000. A considerable amount of
money was raised and he began operations,
after a fashion, around the middle of July.
He had difficulty getting generators in and
aircraft in but when he did get them in,
people again noted these effects on the
clouds. Although a lot of hail occurred
out there last year, there were enough of
these effects that people knew that some-
thing different was going on. So this
year, I think their system works something
like this: that over the area where they
are thinking of conducting a program, they
ask interested individuals to meet and they
have a number of directors scattered out
over the area. These directors go around

I
