l::'~o

project for $22,000. Is there any further
discussion? All' those in favor will signify
by saying 'aye'; opposed - the motion is
carried.

The next item is the cooperative agr~e-
ment on the Rio Grande Salvage project. I
will ask Mr. Bud Sweet to comment .on that."
. " - .

I

MR. ffivEET:

"This cooperative agreement is something
we have had in mind for quite a while. It
contemplates an investigation of the possi-
bility of conservation of water through the
rectification of the Conejos River channel
from Mogote to La Sauses and the Rio Grande
channel from about the Soldiers Home road to
Alamosa. In these areas fields are over-
flowed and it has been roughly estimated
that 10,000 acre feet can be salvaged in
these river reaches. The work on this in-
vestigation will result in a reconnaissance
report outlining what will be needed to pre-
pare a feasibility report, including Alamosa
and La Jara Creeks.

MR. SPARKS:

In addition to the water salvage, channel
rectification would increase the assurance
that debit water could be conveyed to the
state line without suffering the tremendous
losses whiCh presently occur."

"Mr. Sweet is Project Engineer with tne
Bureau of Reclamation and is stationed at
Monte Vista. This office is under Region 5
of the Bureau with headquarters in Amarillo,
which has jurisdiction over the Rio Grande
drainage in the State of Colorado.

This is a cooperative program, strictly
cooperafive, in that the Federal government
will match the amount of money that the State
will put up."

MR. SWEET:

"This program will take about five years.
It will depend upon what our first year's
study discloses."

I

MR. SPARKS:

"Region 5 has requested $10,000 for this
in their budget if the State of Colorado puts
up that amount of money. We are in such a
critical situation with the States of New'
Mexico and Texas under the Rio Grande Compact
that we should spare no effort to salvage
water in the Rio Grande basin."
