278

Mr. Cory asked the Board if there should be comment
on the uranium situation.

Mr. Williams stated that he had every confidence
in our Board member Dan Hunter. We have a shortage
of power. Dan would give that story. He said that it
is a Colorado problem, 'and that every place possible
the Board should try for hold-over storage in Colorado~
He said they were getting together in the Eastern and
Western &lopes, and trying to iron out the difficulties
in their own localities.

I

Mr. Cory then called on Frank Meeker, State Re-
presentative, Montrose, Colorado, who made the follow-
ing statement: '

"You all know I represent Western Slope interests.
I am fighting for that interest in the Curecanti,
dam. Water is the largest and greatest asset
Colorado has to deal with today, and Colorado
is looking upon you, gentlemen, to render a de-
cision, giving favorable consideration to the
development of a dam on the Gunnison river,
which will be beneficial to tne entire state of
Colorado. This Board will resolve itself into
a jury and the entire state has eyes on this
jury. As representatives of the 3tate, we have
poured into this Board many thousands of dollars.
We expect that money, which was not an expense
account, it was an investment by this state, to
reap dividends, and we don't want this 'water to
pass to California~.
Basin
Mt. Cory said the Gunnison/River Committee worked
very hard to reach a conc~usion on the Gunnison Basin.
The Board said to settle this thing at a grass root level.
We did it and the result has been thrown out the window.
We represent very basic local interests. Now 'the Bureau
of Reclamation is not responsible to us. When they en-
couraged us to accept the 940,000 acre-feet, the Committee
did not have anyone to take notes at that time, so I took
notes myself as follows:

Mr. Cory: Plan E. was put out. We were told the
Bureau would accept - Bureau would not.

Bennett: Green report our first knowledge. Two
meetings in Denver. We agreed to adopt and re-
commend small Curecanti. We would put out stakes
on high water level. Drop Curecanti and get more
storage. Could not recommend 510 Crystal. We
will 'recommend small Curecanti. We will take
Whitewater out and put in another phase. It
would take about 4-1/2 million acre ft. storage
to equate the stream.

I
