277

I

growing needs (when I say our - I do not mean
the Western Slope nor just Colorado but all the
upper basin states) for more meats and agricul-
tural products such as potatoes, onions, sugar
beets, to mention a few. This for the additional
water needed for irrigation.

From time to time inquiries come to the City Hall
about water for industrial uses; to mention just
a recent one - "Could we supply our daily use
150,000 gallons in a manufacturing enterprise? -
The quality of the water must be fairly free from
alkali". If we could supply it, the last question -
what is the price?

You people of the eastern part of Colorado are
feeling the surge of industry while we are just
commencing to feel a trickle; for the best in-
terests of all we must be prepared to supply
those needs. Most important of all is water and
power. To secure these our watchword must be
COOPERATION.

As a final thought, I would like to leave with
you this pertinent question - Who and by what
authority was a criteria set up for the people
of Colorado?"

I

Mr. Cory then called on Wailliam A. Naff of Mont-
rose, who said:
the
"We wanted/Curecanti in the first place. That
is the way we feel about it and are going to
fight for it".

Mr. L. Kuiper, Delta, Colorado then made a very brief
statement in favor of the Curecanti project.

Fred Paddock, Division Engineer, Montrose, Colo-
rado, made the following statement:

"You can start at the mouth of the Gunnison. I
c~n't tell you exactly how many days we are short
of water, but we are short every year. Going up
stream to the mouth of the Uncompahgre, and the
Uncompahgre Valley, in late July, August and
September, we are short of water. We have probably
an 80% supply. Some of them are better off and
some not so good - it depends on the priority.
~he only answer I can see is storage. Without
storage we can't do much more".
