276

INDUSTRY. As heretofore been announced by
eminent authority, the Western Slope of Colorado
has the largest energy resources, deposits in
the world. Even greater than the Rhur Valley
in Germany, for which two world wars have been
fought. Eighty-five percent of the uranium
produced in the United States comes from the
Colorado Plateau, which is adjacent to the
Gunnison river, yet, in order that, this pro-
duct, so vital to national defense can be
processed into atomic energy it must be
transported by rail to such places as the .
Columbia river and the Tennessee valley where
water and water power is available."

I

Mr. Cory stated that he thought he should intro-
duce Mr. Herbert W. Ross, Mayor, Montrose, Colo-
rado. Mr. Ross made the following statement:

"Mr. Chairman, as I am a new man at this meeting,
as you all know, may I take a minute to give you
my background. .

I am an oldtimer in Colorado, having come to the
Western Slope in 1907 and have been a resident
there ever since. After my stint in World War
I, I returned to Montrose and became a stock-
holder, an active member in a Hardware and Im-
plement Company, implements being my work. This
took me allover the Uncompahgre Valley and ad-
jacent areas until I retired in 1950.

I made hundreds of friends among farmers, stock-
men and many miners and soon found that their
problems were not only theirs but ours, as one
could not progress without all progressing or
retrogressing.

In 19S1 I was elected to. the City Council of
Montrose and this year am Mayor of our City. Our
Council thought we should have a representative
at this meeting. With what prestige I may have
from my official title I wish to endorse the
statements of the representatives of the Western
Slope, as I know most of them personally.

One statement of Mr. Dodds (Bill to us of the
Uncompahgre Valley and adjacent areas) "is the
need of additional pasture and grazing land".
I notice in driving around the project the in-
creasing number of livestock kept on ranches in-
stead of going to the higher ranges as was formal-
ly done. This increasing of pasture land is ne-
cessary if we are to continue to fulfill our

I
