2, The White River from Rangely to the confluence with
the Green Ri ',er;

], The Yampa River frcm river mile 56 to the city of Craig;

.

4, The COlorado River from river mile 154 to river mile 96
(to encompass the entirety of Ruby and Westwater Canyons)

C. Other Sensitive Areas.

Large numbers of squawfish are found in the area of the

Colorado River between Palisade anq the confiuence with the

Gunnison River.

It is necessary to maintain adequate flow,

temperature, and hydrologic conditions in this segment of the

Colorado River and to assure that no new barriers to migration

are construct<;d.

This document calls for protection of this

river segment principally through maintenance of flow and temp-

erature regim<;s,

Other protective measures must be considered to

assure long-t<;rm maintenance of this river segment.

In addition, biological opinions for the GCC Joint Venture

.

Water System (Aug. 24, 1984) and other proposed projects require,

as mitigation for depletions, contribution of funds toward con-

stuction of fish passageways at the Redlands Water and Power

Company diversion on the Gunnison riv~r (RM 3).

The rationale

fOJ: this action is to "restore forty (40) miles of the Gunnisoll

Rlver co use by squawfish.

Reliance on this measure will require

proof that passageways are being used effectively by adult squaw-

fish migrating upstream and by fry and juvenile squawfish drifting

(\o\~'nst:-t::2.I\\.

The success of this measure will also require rlevel-

opment and maintenance of flow, temperature, hydrologic, and rip-

arian conditions adequate for the squaw fish on the Gunnison River

[rom its confluence with the Colorado River to river mile forty,

.

6'
