uvuu

and evaluation of data and preparation of
an interim reconnaissance report of the
Upper colorado River Salinity Control Study.
The study is being made in cooperation with
the Federal Water Pollution Control Adminis-
tration and may lead to future feasibility
investigations for salinity control in the
Upper Colorado River Basin.

I

Late in June a contract was awarded to
the Willard Pease Drilling Company of Grand
Junction, Colorado, on a bid price of $52,886
to plug two old wells in the White River and
Piceance Creek areas th~t now discharge salt
impregnated water into Colorado River tribu-
taries. Plugging of the wells was completed
early in August. This is the first step in
an extensive program to improve water quality
through the Colorado RiVer Basin. The Federal
Water Pollution Control Administration and
the Bureau of Reclamation are conducting a
search for other sources of high saline
pollution in the Colorado River Basin.
Appropriate additional measures will be
instituted to reduce pollution from all
sources.

Under our advance planning, as previously
reported, the Fruitland Mesa project definite
plan report has been completed and approved
by the Commissioner. Preconstruction investi-
gations have been in progress since issuance
of the definite plan report. Specification
surveys for' the Gould Canal structures and
structure designs have been initiated. Studies
are now under way to determine the final loca-
tion for the proposed Fruitland Mesa Canal
diversion dam. The Commissioner's office
has approved a preliminary draft of the
project repayment contract. A copy of the
proposed contract has been given to the
Directors of the Fruitland Mesa Conservancy
District prior to undertaking contract nego-
tiations. Plans for settlement of new farm
units in the project area are also going
forward.

I
