The project would re-establish the <br />appropriately configured active channel, <br />attendant floodplain, meander pattern, and <br />stream gradient. Riparian areas would be <br />revegetated to enhance bank stability and <br />ecological function. In-stream structures and an <br />enhanced riffle/pool complex would enhance <br />cover for native fish species. The Lower Boulder <br />Creek and Coal Creek Open Space Master Plan <br />envisions preserving existing wetlands and <br />creating other wetlands via partial diversion of <br />stream flows. The sponsor-owned Kenosha <br />gravel mine could be converted to a wetland and <br />energy dissipation basin. Coal Creek base flows, <br />which primarily comprise gray~water from <br />upstream wastewater facilities, might be diverted <br />and filtered through this wetland basin prior to its <br />outfall near the project limits. Appropriate native <br />plant species would be planted along the stream, <br />wetlands, and uplands to improve habitat <br />diversity and attempt to create a continuous <br />riparian corridor. <br /> <br />The proposed project is located directly <br />upstream of the confluence of Monument and <br />Fountain Creeks in Colorado Springs. CO. The <br />project consists of a series of grade restoration <br />structures. wetland development, and riparian <br />plantings. <br /> <br />Boulder County <br />Parks and <br />Open Space <br />Department <br /> <br />City of <br />Colorado <br />Springs <br /> <br />The project was located along 5 miles of Longs Spanish Peaks- <br />Canyon Creek, a right bank tributary of the Purgatoire Soil <br />Purgatoire River immediately upstream of and Water <br />Trinidad Reservoir, CO. The feasibility <br />report is scheduled to <br />begin in November 2003. <br /> <br />Albuquerque District will <br />submit the Preliminary <br />Restoration Plan to SPD <br />for review and approval in <br />September 2002. <br /> <br />in May 2002, the project <br />was terminated at the <br />request of the local <br />sponsor. Considering the <br />effects of oil and gas <br />development to the riparian <br />corridor, the sponsor did <br />not feel they would be able <br />to carry out the operation <br />and maintenance <br />requirements. <br />
