Basalt, Roaring Fork River

Breckenridge, Blue River

Recon

Recon

Sep 2002

Oct 2002

The proposed project will restore geomorphically Town of Basalt
unstable reaches of the Roaring Fork River
channel and its associated riparian habitat, and
improve aquatic habitat through the town of
Basalt The proposed aquatic and riparian
habitat benefits will be achieved by rehabilitating
the floodplain to a more natural and diverse
ecosystem. The improvements will expand and
restore floodplain function and restore physical,
in-stream habitat, making it more suitable for
migratory and spawning trout, waterfowl,
amphibians, and aquatic macro-invertebrates.
Channel modification will also improve fluvial
sediment transport during normal, dominant
discharge flow. The project includes restoration
work on an associated floodplain pond (Levinson
Pond) and a river tributary, Spring Creek. Spring
Creek is potentially prime trout spawning habitat
A secondary objective of the project will increase
access to the town's riverfront for pedestrians,
fishermen, and boaters (rafters and kayakers),

The project has strong local support The
proposed project will restore portions of the
Roaring Fork River channel and overbank
obliterated by hydraulic dredge mining activities
in the early 1900s. The project will restore
definition to the river channel and restore the
adjacent riparian areas.

Town of
Brecken-ridge

Racen phase: $12.7 million
$10,000: Feasibility
phase is estimated
to cost $563,000

$10,000

Not Available

Preliminary Restoration
Plan has been submitted to
SPD for review and
approval

Draft Preliminary
Restoration Plan is
undergoing independent
technical review
