I

~
--Sll

certainly think I would put it up to the
Legislature. It is my belief that, as
far as appropriations go, most of the
people of this State think it is important
that you should have the necessary funds
to do your work. I would certainly ask
for a budget adequate to do the things
you need to do, If there is any way we
can help you in getting a budget to do
this, we will be glad to do so,"

Considerable discussion concerning the budget request
for the U,S.G,S,.stream gaging program followed,
Mr, Crawford stated that he had asked for $9,500, and
asked Mr, Bell of the U.S.G.S, if he had anything to say
on this subject,

MR. BELL:

"Under our present program, as approved
by the Board, there is $6{500 (estimated
expenditures 1955-56 F,Y,J, In addition
we have $16,000 from the Colorado River
special appropriation, I think it is
adequate to put in all the stations the
Board approved. The $9,500 (requirements
estimated 1956-57 F,Y,) is not adequate
for 1956-57 to maintain all of the
stations you have, You have 19; we are
putting in 22 additiona~ stations,.which
means that actual operating costs will
be double~ a little more than double, so
that the ~9,500 will not maintain the
stations we are now putting in, That
figure should be in the neighborhood of
$14,000 or $15,000 if they are to be
carried in operation, If they are not
going to be maintained, we should not
install them,"

MR, CRAWFORD: "I should like to move that this figure
be altered from $9,500 to $14,000,"

I

The motion was seconded by Mr. Peterson and on vote
carried unanimously,
