Because of the overwhelming support, a follow-up meeting in <br />April 2002 was organized to help the state directors establish a formal organization of state natural <br />resource agency leaders. <br /> <br />At its spring meeting, the NRLCS elected officers and regional representatives. Elected officers include: <br />Greg Walcher, president; Nicholas A. DiPasquale (Delaware), vice president; Lonice C. Barrett <br />(Georgia), secretary/treasurer; and John C, Oliver (Pennsylvania), past president, who served as the <br />interim president during the planning and organizational process. <br /> <br />SLB Drought Relief Package: On July 30 the State Board of Land Commissioners (SLB) announced a <br />drought relief package for their grazing and dry land crop lessees, The Board has reduced the amount of <br />rent owed by grazing lessees between 10 and 50 percent depending on the severity ofthe drought in <br />their areas. The reduction will begin with the rental payments due between Sept. 1, 2002 and run <br />through Aug. 30, 2003. For dry land crop lessees, the rent reduction may be up to 30 percent depending <br />on the severity ofthe drought in their areas, <br /> <br />Approximately 2,400 SLB agricultural lessees are impacted by the drought. The proposal passed by the <br />SLB divides Colorado counties into four drought categories based on data compiled by Colorado State <br />University's Cooperative Extension Service. The categories are moderate, severe, extreme or <br />exceptional drought conditions. Drought relief will be offered on a county-by-county basis, with the <br />amount of rental reduction based on the category in which the county falls, <br /> <br />Water Education Forum: The newly formed Colorado Alliance for Water Education (CA WE) held a <br />forum in Pueblo On Aug, 29 to elect Board members and discuss other organization issues, <br /> <br />A broad-based Steering Committee has been working actively for the past two years to form a statewide <br />water education foundation, That effort received ajump-start from the Colorado Water Conservation <br />Board (CWCB) this year with a $250,000 grant. CWCB will also be providing $150,000 annually to <br />CA WE, The CA WE Steering Committee recently reviewed applications for the organization's first <br />Executive Director.
