The draft report is scheduled <br />to be completed by mid to late September. <br /> <br />Non-game Wildlife Check-off Receipts: In 2001 Colorado taxpayers donated more than $462,000 to <br />the Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Fund. According to Colorado Department of Revenue figures, <br />42,622 taxpayers checked the Nongame and Endangered Wildlife box on the state income tax form to <br />support management efforts for 750 species of wildlife that aren't hunted or fished in the state. <br /> <br />During the 2000 tax year, 53,000 Colorado taxpayers ~onated $590,000 through the checkoff. <br /> <br />Colorado was the first state in the nation to create the funding mechanism for nongame and threatened <br />and endangered species management programs. Benevento has served as the department's director of enviromnental programs since July <br />1999. <br /> <br />Jane Norton was selected by Owens to serve as his lieutenant governor running mate in the November <br />2002 gubernatorial election,. Norton will be on unpaid leave until Nov. 5. On Nov. 6 Norton will return <br />to her position as the Executive Director until and unless she must resign from the position before the <br />January 2003 inauguration. <br /> <br />Cattany To Head DMG: Governor Owens has annojmced that Ron Cattany has been appointed director <br />of the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG). Cattany has served as deputy director of the <br />Department of Natural Resources (DNR) since 1991,'and was an assistant director ofDNR from 1981- <br />1991. Cattanyhas served as acting director ofDMG ~or two months, since the retirement of Mike Long. <br /> <br />Pollard New Deputy: Following the appointment o( Cattany to be the new DMG Director, DNR <br />Assistant Director Tim Pollard was promoted to the position ofDNR Deputy Director. <br />1 <br />Natural Resources Leadership Council: On July 3i DNR Executive Director Greg Walcher <br />announced that the heads of state agencies charged with conservation, resource management and <br />outdoor recreation have formed a bi-partisan organization aimed at building partnerships to enhance the <br />management and conservation of natural resources. <br /> <br />This new organization, called the Natural Resources Leadership Council of the States (NRLCS), <br />recently received organizational approval from the National Governors Association. The idea for the <br />organization came from an October 2001 natural resQurces summit organized by The Conservation <br />Fund. The Conservation Fund, with support from tM Richard King Mellon Foundation, brought together. <br />natural resources directors from 45 states last fall to discuss innovative partnerships and multi-state <br />collaborations, stewardship and management ofpubljc lands and opportunities to work more <br /> <br />8 <br />
