~6

I

Mr. Will may know something about the New Mexico situation.

Mr. Riter stated that the Governor of New Mexico
loaned the Secretary of the Interior everything available
in the way of reports completed on San Juan Project with
diversion to San Juan Channel; plans tb use all divertable
water on San Juan Valley. Indians asked for 122,000 acre-
feet out of 560,000 acre feet.

Mr. Hunter stated: "I only know the views of the
people in and around Farmington and Aztec. According to
reports made at the meeting in Durango ten days ago,
Chamber of Commerce did say they tentatively agreed with
I dian Agency for 560,000 acre-feet of this water for
SRiprock Project. I told them we had no right to dictate
to New Mexico on how to use their water."

Mr. Breitenstein said "We have gotten along well
with New Mexico in recent years. I wondered if it would.not
be well before we take any action to get into communication
with them regarding the project."

Mr. Hunter said "Chambers of Commerce in Durango,
Farmington and Aztec areas in S. W. are not going to enter
into any fight with New Mexico; none of our business as to
how they allocated .the use of that water. Don't know what action
we should take in this matter at this time."

I

Mr. Breitenstein asked, "What do you think of the
idea of the Board taking up matters with New Mexico and re-
porting back at next meeting?"

Mr. Hunter replied he thought it would be a fine idea.

Mr. Breitenstein said the very appropriate
thing to do would be to authorize the Director here to take
the matter up with the New Mexico people.

Mr. Crawford inquired what the directions were to the
Director.

Mr. Breitenstein replied they were to discuss with
appropriate officials of New Mexico regarding the La Plata-
Animas Project, to ascertain views of New Mexico in general.

Mr. Riter said people want big L8 Plata-Animas Project.
Small project involves state line; what they want now is the
larger project, he said.
