up before the next meeting, he and I have a close liaison and we can
talk about it and work it out. Is that satisfactory? Okay.

Now we go from the simple to the less simple, item no. 3 on the agenda.
Would you start the discussion on that please.

I

A demonstration map for this presentation was used by Mr. Sparks.

Mr. Sparks: S. 702 has been introduced in the United States Senate by
Senators Dominick and Haskell to designate the Flat Tops area of the
White River National Forest in Colorado as a wilderness area. This area
contained in the bill contains about 212,700 acres and the map we have
up there demonstrates the sequence of events that have happened con-
cerning this 'area. The Senators have requested that we express our
views since it involves the headwaters of the White River.

Mr. Hauk from the local White River Forest Service headquarters here in
Glenwood Springs is an expert in this area. Since his time is limited,
I would like to have him first show his slides of the area that we are
talking about. You will hear much about the Meadows area, This is an
area which has been in controversy since the original proposal was made.
The Meadows area is on the South Fork of the White River along the
southern boundary of the proposed area. Just to get some visual picture
of what we are talking about in the Flat Tops area, Mr. Hauk has a few
selected slides that he has taken over the years.

Mr. Hauk:
area which
ness.

What I have here are a few slides of the Flat Tops primitive
is designated for re-classification as the Flat Tops Wilder-

Let me introduce myself first. I am Paul Hauk. I am a staff officer
for the White River National Forest. We get involved in recreational
lands, special uses such as the ski areas, transmission lines, power
projects, and we also have a function of watershed management. In this
recreational phase, besides skiing and everything else, we get into
wilderness use, primitive areas, and so forth. That is why I am here
today.

I

What I am going to do is just hurriedly run around the entire perimeter
of the primitive area. We will start on the northwest corner. (slide)
This is Marvine Lake, upper Marvine Lake at the head of East Marvine
Creek. (slide) This is inside the existing primitive area. (slide)
This is up at Marvine Lake, also inside the primitive area. The exten-
tions that you see over on the Senate Bill map will come down much

-23-
