below this particular lake over to the north. (slide) This is east
MarvineCreek, looking generally across the area to the south, south-
west. You get a pretty good iaea of the nature of the country and why
it was termed the Flat Tops. You get upon the plateau area and then
the canyons, the heads of these rather flat drainages, and so forth. I
And one of the characteristic features of this particular area is the
dead spruce. It was killed by the Englemann spruce beetle starting back
in the 40's and went into the 50's. It cbvered quite an extensive area.

(slide) Going a little further to the east, this is part of Trappers
Lake at the lower left hand corner. Again, giving you an idea of what
some of the country looks like. At one time, the Bureau of Reclamation
had proposed a dam to be built on top of the existing Trappers Lake, but
this was just a proposal and nothing serious ever came out of it. And
I am sure that Trappers Lake will go into the wilderness area when it
is reclassified. (slide) This is a ground view of the lake, very scenic.
You notice the dead spruce, the characteristic color in the background
here.

(slide) Now this is going further east into the McGinnis-Skinny Fish
lakes area, over towards the Chinese Wall, and so forth. The road to
Trappers Lake shows up in the lower right hand corner. Trappers Lake
would be on up to the right.

We will swing around the fringes of the Flat Tops and look at some of
the lakes on the east side. The head of the Derby Creek drainages.
There is a small dam on Hooper Lake here in the Hooper area. (slide)
This is coming again south along the east side of the primitive area.
These are the Island Lakes, also inside the existing primitive area.
This is Crescent Lake a little further south along the east side. (slide)
This is some of the Derby country looking generally east. You people
that are not familiar with the Eagle country, this is Castle Peak
immediately north of Eagle. So I am looking down from along the rim of
the east side of the Flat Tops down the Derby drainage area. Some of
this is also supposed to go into the new wilderness area. The reason
we didn't put it in in our proposal that has been in Congress now for
several years is becuase it has a lot of four-wheel roads. There are
ditches in there, fences, and so forth.

We have been accused of being too pure in our interpretation of the
Wilderness Act. I just wanted to show that our interpretation is based
on what the Wilderness Act says.

I

(slide) This is Sweetwater Lake on the southeast edge of a corner of the

-24-
