lU14

MR. PETERSON:

,
You will note that under the direction of Mr.
Crabtree, who is meek but forceful, you will
find the office and his associates capable,
energetic, and surely cooperative. If we in
the Salt Lake office are misinformed, we would
like some direction. We feel you_are'in good
hands down here.

I

I would like to report on the new starts.
One which Mr. Crabtree mentioned is the San
Miguel which is in this area. In addition to
the San Miguel we have the Dallas Creek area.
Dallas Creek, you will remember, was covered
by the Board following or during their meeting
in Montrose. Some of the local interests have
been pressing for immediate work-' there. That
is already programed for this fiscal year but
they are hoping for some step up and have asked
what we could do if there is assistance through
State contributions. Funds in the amount of
$117,000 and $38,000 are included in the fiscal
year appropriation requests for initiation of de-
tailed project investigations on the Dallas Creek
and San Miguel Projects respectively. A field
review of the projects will be scheduled early
in the year to appraise the problem areas and to
determine the investigational criteria to be
followed. The Tri-County Conservancy District
has indicated a desire to have some landsin the
lower Uncompahgre Valley served from the Dallas,
Creek Project and is urging consideration of
Ridgeway Reservoir for the additional flood con-
trol benefits it would provide. These possibil-
ities will be considered~

We, at this time, don't want to make a com-
mitment on that point because we are not sure yet
just what funds we are going to come up with from
Congressional appropriations. If we are success-
ful we may have sufficient funds and we don't want
to request local contributions unless we have some
assurance of progress, realizing, of course, that
we can use only so much funds for staffing addi-
tional technicians. Men we need are scarce but we
will wait on that situation until after Congress
has made its findings."

"How soon will you have the answer to that?
How much money will you have for the Dallas
Proj ect?"

I
