1011

I

carry the additional water required for the
block of a new land in the east central por-
tion of the project. A lateral system would
be provided for this new block of land. The
existing irrigation system would convey water
to the scattered tracts of new land.

The project was authorized for construction
by Congress on April 11, 1956, Public Law 485.
The Durango office field draft of the definite
plan report is scheduled for completion April 1,
1959. As of today the detailed land classifica-
tion and drainage studies are almost complete,
the agricultural and economic surveys and studies
are just starting, water supply studies are
about half finished and much of the data and
material for the design of the system and pre-
paration of cost estimates has been gathered.
Overall, the field office work is probably about
75 percent complete.

In 1954 the plan for the Animas-La Plata
proj ect anticipated a storage reserv'oir on' .the
Animas River just below the mouth of Cascade Creek,
about 22 miles upstream from Durango. We called
this site, the Teft Reservoir site. Our current
studies involve the investigation of other potential
reservoir sites upstream from the Teft site. Re-
gardless of the location of the reservoir finally
selected, the Animas-La Plata diversion canal would
head in the vicinity of the mouth of Cascade Creek.
The diversion canal will probably be about 49 miles
long and will convey Animas River water to the
La Plata River Basin. The canal would traverse the
range of mountains on the west side of the Animas
River by means of tunnels, siphons, concrete flumes
and open cuts. Terminal storage would be provided
at Hay Gulch Reservoir for lands in"Colorado and for
some areas in New Mexico. Meadows Reservoir in New
Mexico would provide storage for the Meadows Unit.

I

Preliminary location surveys of the Animas-La
Plata Diversion Canal were accomplished during fiscal
year 1958. Detailed topographic mapping of Hay Gulch
Dam site is nearly complete. Gathering of basic
water supply records and preparation of preliminary
water supply studies are underway.
