I

I

MR. STAPLETON:

MR. EAKES:

MR. NELSON:

MR. STAPLETON:

MR. SPARKS

.L'J:"; I

on another project. They move them around
but they are able to use all that personnel.
If this appropriation is cut down to where
it presently is, there will need to be a
reduction in force in that office. I think
what we need to strive to do is to get Con-
gress to put up enough money to at least main-
tain the present personnel arrangement in both
the Grand Junction and the Durango offices.
As for the Durango office, the amount of money
that we want to get from Congress is $220,000
approximately. Now the amount of money we
want to get for the Grand Junction office, I
don't know. The cut there, from what Mr.
Larson said, is approximately fifty percent.
So what we are probably talking about is in
the neighborhood of a half million dollars
or more."

"Just one more question. The $20,000 you
are talking about is an evidence of good
faith and interest in the State of Colorado?"

"That's right. We are hoping that per-
haps we will prime the pwnp."

"For a little bit of clarification, as I
understand it, the administration has requested
the Bureau field offices to cut their appro-
priation requests below the figure that was
actually submitted to Congress in January.
I don't have the figures for Grand Junction
but I learned through the grapevine that they
are in'the same situation as Durango, If there
was a request submitted to Congress for $100,000
the administration is now telling its executives
to whittle that down about fifty percent, so
it is below what was actually published in the
budget in January."

"Thank you, Mr. Nelson. Well, I would now
like to have us hear from the Director who
talked to Mr. Larson, I believe, yesterday.
I would like, Larry, for you to state as to
whether it has some state-wide implications
as well as the particular problem Bill has men-
tioned. Will you comment for us now?"

"I am sorry I was late. The reason was
that I was going over this with Mr. Larson
again just a few minutes ago. It is true that
